11. A century ago many made this trip, some returned

La Sapinière - ½ a k from Belgium)

Departing Dover (Roman escaped photo)
Eight thirty sailing meant a prompt departure from the campground. Easy drive to Dover which we made in good time.  Smooth sailing and it was fun to wave goodbye to the white cliffs of Dover and head to sea.

First night in 🇫🇷
Am I twisting it the wrong way?
With us heading to the Somme I was acutely aware that a hundred years ago so many young men made the same trip and did not return.  It was less than an hour to the front and it demonstrated how close things were.  Almost had a mutiny on the good ship Disco as the ½Cs insisted on listening to BBC's Voices of the First World War which is an excellent account by WW1 soldiers recorded in the 60s & 70s and compiled for the centennial.  We prevailed, just.  Actually the children listened intently but they would have preferred to listen to a girl that was almost as good as a boy, her dog & cousins.

We arrived at Camping de la Ferme des Saules and were instantly delighted.  The farm shop is incredible, with meats, fruit and veggies as well as cheeses, beers and wines.  Dinner was a fresh chicken roast with roast potatoes and steamed runner beans while the children ran around playing with the lovely dog then wore themselves out on the trampoline.

Tomorrow Polygon Wood and Tyne Cott.
