273. Slipped Up

Ispra, Lake Maggiore, Italy

Fogging truck beside Teasel
We had been warned that mosquito fumigation would start at eight thirty in the morning. Today was the first day that I had seen kite surfers on the lake and I was keen to get out in the boat as it was blowing at least ten knots at the camp after a week of calm mornings. The eradication truck duly arrived and fogged as it was contracted to do. What a complete waste of time! The fog was ripped away over the top of the buildings. Thirty years ago while loading for the AgWagons for my Dad one of the frustrations was waiting for calm, usually mornings.

After breakfast Iris and I set off for a sail, unfortunately, without a camera. Decided to sail across the lake, to Belgirate, a distance of about four and a half kilometres if one were able to sail a straight line... Headed off in a frustrating light breeze and got becalmed about a third of the way across so swam off the boat as it was a gorgeous day. As we finished the breeze started again so we headed off again. Landed on a steep stone slipway next to the Hotel Milano that was unbelievably slippery, Iris managing to immerse herself on landing which she took in good heart. Shared a pizza at the hotel then returned in a light breeze with iris sailing all the way. We both loved the adventure and congratulated ourselves heartily returning a bit before five.

Went lake swimming which was warmer than the pool and beautifully clear.

The wharf had a sharp non slip surface and no steps
